Soul Flower (2003)
Acrylic on canvas board, 19”x25”
When I started painting in earnest (as opposed to just fluffing around with ideas!), I was living in a small cabin at the back of my grandparents’ house.  After a few serious long-term relationships that eventually came to an end and other misfired attempts at love, I’d decided to give romance a rest for a few years.  I took the time to think about what it meant to love and be loved by someone who felt like they were a part of me, and I a part of them.  I painted this flower of two faces in profile growing from the same stem, on an inexpensive canvas board (being a bit economically challenged), and hung it on my wall unframed, as a kind of mandala for the sort of relationship I wanted.  I met Frank in 2003, and we got together in 2004.
