The Purpletown Puppets Gallery

Half-way through 1999, in my third year of classroom teaching, I decided to become a children's puppeteer. It wasn't a calculated move, I just knew I had to get back into performing somehow, and one of my colleagues said "What about puppetry?" So I looked up 'Puppets' in the Yellow Pages and found Anita Sinclair, who became my new guru and teacher. Little did I know what a glorious obsession it would become for the next six years, taking me all around Victoria and parts of New South Wales, to giggle and dance and sing with thousands of little kids and their mums and dads and carers.

And boy oh boy, did I sniff some glue! Not intentionally of course, and (mostly) in well-ventilated rooms. But in the space of those first heady years, I churned out five full shows complete with new sets and puppets and costumes and music and promo materials and tour schedules and... I couldn't help it. It was like I'd rubbed Aladdin's lamp and let out an enormous creative genie that took over my life. It was amazing and wonderful while it lasted, and I still have the odd pang to pack up my smallest booth, a handful of my little friends and a coffee plunger, and trip across the Nullabor in a dusty old white van.

Instead, it's probably better to share them with you here. Enjoy the show!
